What is the “memory shape effect” and how to choose the right “memory”?

What is the "memory shape effect" and how to choose the right "memory"?

What is the "memory shape effect" and how to choose the right "memory"?

Each of us, who set the goal to choose an orthopedic mattress or pillow, faced the concept of the «memory-shaped effect».

Foam «with memory» is used as the main layer to ensure comfort and orthopedic effect. But a mattress «with memory» is not always a guarantee of good sleep. In this article we will analyze the concept of «memory of the form», and I will tell you how to choose really qualitative, and most importantly, effective «memory».

The material that slowly restores the original form after the load relief is called the material «with the memory of the form» or «Memory». The essence of this effect is relaxation. But, the material should work while you lie on it, guaranteeing relaxation and comfort. The fact that it will slowly recover after you get off it, and while you are lying on it, just flattened, will not ensure the result. Therefore, you should seriously approach the choice of a mattress «with memory».

First of all, there are two common methods of using foam with memory in the mattress:

  • Layer over traditional spring blocks;
  • The layer on the springless block.

In the first case, the layer of memory serves only for comfort, orthopedic effect, i.e. the natural position of the spine does not provide.

I’ve studied and tested most of the models from many manufacturers, and I can assure you that not all memory materials are equal and perform the stated functions.

In order to understand the difference between the models, and ultimately the difference in cost as it seems at first glance, the same products, you need to understand the fundamentals.

The first cost factor is the supporting layer. The basic structure of the mattress «with memory» should be simple: a layer of foam with memory attached/laminated/glued to a layer of foam base, which, in turn, has a different composition and density.

Mattress – these layers complement each other and work together. Accordingly, the quality of the mattress depends on both the upper layer and the lower layer. This means density is one of the most important indicators when choosing a mattress.

The optimal support layer is a material with a density of 48 kg / m³- 54 kg / m³. Material with a lower density will not last long. And let’s talk about the higher one below.

You should also pay attention to the way of joining the layers. The cheapest is the glue connection. This method is the least recommended. Because glue contains harmful impurities, the new product often has a pungent smell.

Lamination differs from conventional bonding technology but is also carried out using glue.

Safe and reliable is a glueless connection, which can not affect the cost.

The most important part of the mattress, or another cost factor. The thickness of the material with memory can be different, usually 2cm/3.5 cm/5 cm/7cm/10cm/12cm.

Accordingly, thickness affects the cost of the mattress. But, in this case, more – does not mean better. Optimum thickness – 7 cm (in some cases 5 cm). The smaller thickness is not enough for your shoulder to immerse in the mattress to such a degree that the spine is in a natural position, but large, on the contrary, meaningless, because an adult person pushes an average of 5-7 cm (depending on weight) lying on the side. It is not advisable to use a monolithic block «memory», because first of all, this material requires proper support, secondly you should not immerse yourself in the material too deeply – this will create difficulties when turning and you will be hot.

Foam with memory is produced in the same density. Density is usually measured in kilograms per meter cubic (kg/m3). Mattresses use a density of 25 – 85kg/m3. This should be specified in the description. Density can also be identified by V rating, for example, V60 for a density 60 kg/m3, etc. Often mattresses use a combination of layers. Material with greater density is laminated to material with less density. The combinations used by manufacturers have reached a ridiculous level, are the subject of special hype and cause only confusion. There is a variant «winter-summer», i.e. a mattress to turn over. In such a mattress «memory» on the one hand, can be a viable factor, if you bought a poor «memory» on which you are hot, such a mattress can be turned over and used a little more.

You might decide that the higher the density, the better…

To strive for the best – pay at least. Higher density does not always mean higher quality. The density of 80 – 85 kg/m3 means that the foam contains more raw ingredients if you have little weight, or you want a comfortable microclimate in your bed, this density is too much, and in terms of comfort such material will lag behind. Ideally, the density is 50 – 65 kg/m3. This density is enough for people of any weight, and most importantly, it will not be hot.

Good «memory» is available in various modifications. For the manufacturer of cheap material it is unreal. Therefore, you will be offered only one option.

The foam industry «with memory» is massive, and only you can decide whether you want to change the mattress earlier, paying less, or save your mattress longer, paying more. Making such a choice, do not forget that a bad mattress can spoil the condition of the spine, soft tissues, vessels, or at least not sleep, not to mention the ecology of cheap materials.

The choice today is very great. And unscrupulous traders who want to help you part with money is very much. Once again I will give you the main aspects that you should pay attention to when choosing a mattress «with memory»:

  • the structure of the mattress as a whole;
  • density and composition of the supporting layer;
  • thickness of «memory»;
  • «memory density»;
  • the method of joining layers in the mattress;
  • chemical performance;
  • case.

Of course, the case – a thing that can spoil everything. The case should not prevent the materials from being ventilated, or perform its functions, for example, take the form of a body. It should always pay attention, I met with such models in which the case (high-tech, climate control or moisture control) is much more expensive than the «core» mattress. Expensive case, plus cheap components give out not the cheapest mattress.

Buying a mattress is always a minefield. And mattresses from Mollyflex® materials have been found by many people. Come to our salons and you will understand why our mattresses have become so popular.
