For many years orthopedics have recommended those suffering from back pains sleep on hard mattresses, as we have often heard, this phrase «The harder the mattress, the better». How is it? And is it really right to sleep on the hard one?

Clinical studies conducted in Spain and published in November 2003 in the prestigious medical journal «The Lancet» refute this theory once and for all. Studies have shown that the ideal mattress for back pain is a mattress of moderate stiffness, and best of all, one that adapts to the shape of the human body and does not transfer tissue. The study by Francisco Kovacs and the Kovacs Foundation in Palma de Mallorca involved 313 people with chronic back pain unrelated to specific spinal problems. People taking part slept on mattresses of various types, not knowing which ones.

The participants, who were lucky enough to sleep on mattresses of moderate hardness, said that they began to take less painkillers, because the pain became less, unlike those who slept on hard mattresses.

This was confirmed by a study conducted at l’Oklahoma State University (USA) by doctors Brad Jacobson, Tia Fallache and Hugh Gemmell, published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine in 2006. In addition, studies have shown that sleeping on the new mattress relative to the old one (which is 5 years old) improves sleep quality by 62% and reduces back pain by 55.3%.

So why did the orthopedists tell everyone to sleep on a hard surface? This is primarily due to the fact that, unlike hard mattresses, softer mattresses (consisting of cheap, not quality foam), gave a shrinkage in the lumbar section, the so-called «hammock effect», which definitely did not reduce the pain in the lumbar department, and made things worse. Here, as they say, it is better to choose from two lesser evils». But today developed materials that not only perfectly adjust to every inch of your body, but also perfectly support the lumbar department, unlike hard mattresses, they do not transfer body tissue and, as a consequence contributes to the elimination of such problems as permanent overturning during sleep, numbness of body parts, tingling in the fingers and toes, moreover, as a rule, such mattresses belong to the category of «anti-prolapses». It is important that you are not trying to find a comfortable position for yourself, you are not adjusting to the mattress, and it adjusts to you.

To date, increasingly orthopedics discourage customers from rigid mattresses and recommend mattresses that adapt to the natural curve of the spine and correctly distribute the weight of various body parts. Of course, mattresses with such characteristics are more expensive, but it is important to remember that on the mattress we spend about a third of our life.
